The Maldive Islands
It's always been my "dream vacation" to visit the Maldive Islands. I used to think it would be the perfect honeymoon, but given I keep pushing marriage further and further out I might need to start thinking about a more tangible date to take the trip. I recently read an interesting article about how global warming and climate change are affecting the tiny grouping of 2,000 islands in the Indian Ocean. The article lead me to a documentary - The Island President. Most people only think of the Maldive Islands as a place for the wealthy to vacation (Tom and Katie anyone?), however, there are appx 300,000 people who call the Maldive Islands home and the very real threat of climate change is putting their very existence into jeopardy.
I highly recommend the documentary, as well as booking yourself a ticket and flying to paradise itself....life is short right? (Fair warning: tickets are quite expensive, however, if you can fly into Dubai or Paris and then fly on to Male - the capital city - from there, you can find something a bit more affordable)
Where to stay:
There are many hotels and resorts on the different islands, below are just a couple options
The Luxurious (and expensive) route:
The Four Seasons Maldives
The affordable traveler route:
Guest Houses (click on the link to view the many options)
The Unique traveler route:
Safaris - a boat that sails around the islands and offers all of the amenities of a hotel
