30 Things I've Learned: #1
-Know when to try and know when to experience.
While I attended fashion school and knew early on what I wanted to do for a career (well until I went and changed it) I still had to take pre-requisite classes. One of these was science. Physical Science to be exact. The class fell on a Wed afternoon, 3 - 6 pm. The teacher was a small in stature, big in personality Indian man. I think science was his porn. If I had possessed even 1/10 of his enthusiasm then I might have shown up to class more. However, I did not. Not at all. Plus it was Spring time. In New York City. The snow was clearing and the sun was shining. I missed quite a few (a lot) of the classes to venture to the heart of Central Park and soak in the Vitamin D. I should point out that I was a very good student with near perfect attendance in all classes. However, there was something about this one, the timing, the subject matter, the gut feeling that being a scientist wasn't in my future, that made me go against my type A personality and ditch. I got a C in the class. The only C I ever got in my college career. I had a tinge of guilt over my attendence and effort. But really I just loved my tan.
Looking back these are some of my fondest memories of that time period. No care in the world. No real consequences other than a below honors level grade. I was 19 and life was caotic but those moments were blissful. Happy. My life trajectory was not going to be made or broken by that class. But the experience and the life lesson have lived on well into my adult life.
Sometimes, a lot of times, everyone else's goal isn't mine. Sometimes there is something so much more to be gained in veering off into another direction.
Know when try. And know when to experience.
