30 Things I've Learned: #20
-Read ACTUAL books.
The ones with pages, made of paper. I read Gone Girl on my ipad, it is the only book I've read on my ipad. It was an amazing read, but when I X'd out of the app after I was done I was left with an unsatisfactory feeling. It felt like I'd gone to someone's house for dinner and just as I finished chewing my last savory and decadent bite they yelled "EVERYONE OUT!". I like turning the last page in a book. Feeling the weight of my accomplishment in my hands.
There is a famous bookstore in Portland, Oregon that takes up an entire city block. I could have spent days in there, but instead I spent an hour. I loved seeing the used books, some with notes scribbled in by people whom I would never meet yet still share a bond with, a book bond. A simlilar interest, even if only in a very brief hundred pages. I loved feeling the new books, hot off the press, their bindings still straight and even, just waiting for the right person to open it up, make it their own.
I know books can be cumbersome, afterall I made my purchases based off what I could carry home. I understand wanting to read on a device, I understand it's place in literature, but there is also still a place for an actual book.
There is still a place for the intimate moment between reader and writer. Don't miss it by only ever seeing the X in the upper right hand corner.
