About
When I was a kid my father announced "let's go to Mt. Rushmore!", for an upcoming 3 day weekend. It was a little over a 13 hour drive from where we lived in Oklahoma. A bit ambitious for a 3 day weekend, but we weren't newbies to road trips. Twice a year we took "big trips" - coast to coast, border to border; at times being in the car for 24 hours. I've slept in the car at rest stops along most of the major interstates throughout America. Once we arrived my father announced he'd misjudged the budget a bit and we were going to need to leave a day early. But it was only 3 days to begin with? So the next morning we got up, saw Mt. Rushmore - "oh cool, the presidents..in a rock" and back we drove. I thought it was fantastic - what an adventure (the farthest my classmates were going was the local lake). I remember the look on my mother's face, she didn't think it was nearly as fantastic as I did.....
My mother - the obsessive planner. My father - the impulsive adrenaline junkie. I'd love to say I landed somewhere in the middle - a perfect balance. However, I'm just both. I put a good amount of research into the majority of my trips - local restaurants (please no chain restaurants), best bars, vintage shops, and things to do that are off the beaten path. Then once on the trip my impulsive tendencies come alive: "let's get a tattoo!", "oh! Is that a for sale house with a pool? Let's go swimming!" (this is called trespassing), "follow those people to the abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn - that's got to be fun!".
The moment the airplane fires it's engines I feel the rush...the anticipation..the excitement of what's to come. It doesn't matter if I'm visiting someplace new or a place I've been before, the experience will be different - new places, new people...new pools.
Take the suggestions of the places I stay, visit, eat at... find inspiration (or comedic relief) in my impulsive tendencies....either way I hope you'll enjoy my journey as I "travel me found".......
